Upcoming Program

Jeevan Vikas Sanstha always seeks ways and means to be relevant to the real issues and needs of millions of poor and disadvantaged individuals, families and communities within the operational areas covered by our Organization. Our Mission is to respond quickly, positively and effectively to the situations which adversely affect our Communities. The poor, the marginalized, the disadvantaged and the vulnerable people - are the Real Focus of each and every intervention which JVS makes. Building up the capacities and the boosting inner potentials of the poor, empowering them to face the challenging situations of their poverty, deprivation and marginalization and thus providing them the hope for a brighter tomorrow - are the expected Out Come of our committed involvement with the life of the poor. Building partnerships with the poor, providing external expertise and facilitation to the marginalized to begin and to accelerate their integrated development processes - are Development Roles played by JVS

As part of the up-coming programs, JVS plans to make the following development interventions in the next 2 years. The implementation of these planned programs largely depends on funds availability. Hence we are urgently in need of funds from Donors - both individual and institutional - who can strengthen our hands and who wish to partner with us:

1. JVS plans to take up Integrated Farmers' Development programs (3 year Programs) in Akola and Buldhana Districts in view of finding both short-term and long-term solutions to the prevailing issue of large number of farmers suicides in the Region.

Over the past 4 years, about 1500 debt-ridden small and marginal farmers committed suicide in our Region. This situation has emerged due to agrarian crises faced by the farmers of the Region - fall in the prices of agricultural products, rise in the cost of farming, absence of sufficient market facilities, excessive use of chemical fertilizers, use of hybrid varieties of seeds, absence of adequate availability of crop loans, very high rate of interests charged by local village money lenders, absence of Farmers' Forums for collective action, etc. This situation has given rise to new social problems in our Region - young mothers becoming widows, large number of children becoming orphans and school drop-outs, families getting disintegrated, big number of small and marginal farmers doing away with farming as a viable income generation source, forced poverty, prostitution, human trafficking, etc.

As per our calculation, it will cost about Rs. 45,00,000/- (EUR 80.000/- UD$ 98,000/-) for the fruitful implementation of a 3-year Farmers' Integrated Development Program which will benefit about 1000 small and marginal farmers of the affected area.

2. JVS plans to take up District level HIV & AIDS Prevention & Contorl Programs (3 year Programs) in Akola, Buldhana and Yavatmal Districts in order to create awareness among the people of these Civil Districts on HIV and AIDS pandemic and to prevent the further spread of this killer disease in these districts:

The State of Maharashtra ranks second in the number of HIV & AIDS patients. It is roughly estimated that about 0.2 million people of the State are HIV/AIDS patients. In every Civil District out of the total 37 Civil Districts of Maharashtra there are thousands of HIV positive patients and their number keep increasing alarmingly over years despite various preventive and control measures taken by various agencies. Among all the cities of India, the City of Mumbai (Bombay) which is the State Capital of Maharashtra has the highest HIV population. This deadly disease is spreading very fast into the rural Maharashtra including the 5 Civil Districts with 10 million population which are the operational areas covered by our Organization.

From 1st October 2005, our Organization took up a 3-year HIV & AIDS Control and Prevention Program covering the whole Civil District of Amravati. This program includes Awareness Creation among the general public through various means, motivating the communities for voluntary HIV testing, offering counseling services to the HIV patients and their families, providing care and support to the HIV & AIDS patients, etc. Over the past months, this project of JVS has been creating a very big impact among hundreds of rural villages, high schools and colleges. With this project, our Organization has been able to create Awareness among one lakh population of the District in just 15 months time. With this program we have been able to work in close collaboration with the Government machineries and other Civil Society Organizations. With our rich experience background in the area of HIV & AIDS prevention and Control, our Organization now intends to take up similar Programs in other Civil Districts within the geographical area covered by our Organization's activities.

As per our calculation, it will cost about Rs. 35,00,000/- (EUR 63.000/- UD$ 78,000/-) for the fruitful implementation of a 3-year District level HIV & AIDS Prevention and Control Program which will benefit about 0.3 million people of the Civil District

3. JVS plans to start a short-term Care & Support Centre for HIV & AIDS patients to supplement our on-going HIV & AIDS prevention and Control Programs:

We intend to construct a short-term Care & Support Centre for HIV & AIDS patients as large number of HIV & AIDS patients of our Region have no such residential facility available within the 14 Civil Districts covered by the backward Vidarbha Region of Maharashtra. As per our plan, the proposed project will cost about Rs. 40,00,000/- (EUR 72.000/- US $ 89,000/-).

4. JVS plans to take up more intensive and integrated Watershed and Land development programs in the poverty-striken Tribal villages in Melghat of Amravati District and in the tribal areas of other Civil Districts:

It is expected that the fruitful implementation of Integrated Watershed and Land Development programs will help to enhance the Livelihood options of the very poor and the vulnerable tribal communities of our Region in the first place as well as help in the sustainable development processes of these communities.

5. JVS also plans to widen its Family Development Program (family sponsorship program). This is a Family-to-Family support program. We plan to increase the present number of 250 Below Poverty Line Tribal/Rural families to 1000 Below Poverty Line families in the next 3 years' time, depending on the availability of donors to sponsor the needy families.

It is expected that within a span of 5-7 years, a Below Poverty Line Tribal/Rural family of our area will be able to improve its economic conditions through various planned Income Generation Programs, able to improve its housing conditions, health status of the family members and the educational status of its school going children.

On the average, it costs about Rs. 60,000/ (EUR 1,100/- US $ 1,350/-) for leading one marginalized family from the situation of abject poverty to prosperity and sustainable development within the span of 5-7 years.
